The quiet rim
The Grand Canyon is a mile deep and about two hundred and seventy miles long, and the numbers do nothing for you until you are standing at the edge of it.
Almost everyone goes to the South Rim. We walked the North Rim, which is over a thousand feet higher, takes a tenth of the visitors, and is a genuinely different place — high enough that the desert gives way to spruce and fir, cool where the other side is hot, and closed by snow for half the year. Same canyon, viewed from the far side, with far fewer people at the railing.
We camped at Mather, over on the South Rim — so we got both edges of the same hole in the ground on one trip.
A forest that turned to stone
East of there, the Petrified Forest holds trees that fell around two hundred and twenty million years ago, in the Triassic, and were buried in sediment before they could rot.
What happened next is the interesting part. Groundwater carrying dissolved silica moved through the buried wood, and molecule by molecule the organic material was replaced by mineral. Not squashed, not fossil-imprinted — substituted, cell structure and all. What is lying on the ground is a quartz copy of a log, accurate down to the grain, in colours the trace metals decided.
The Crystal Forest trail runs through one of the densest concentrations of it. The logs are broken into sections like felled timber, which they are, except they weigh what stone weighs and have been there since before there were flowers.
The slot
North at Page, Antelope Canyon runs down through Navajo sandstone. In places it is narrow enough to touch both walls at once, and it goes down far enough that daylight arrives filtered and bounced, glowing off the rock rather than falling on it.
It was cut by flash floods. Water arriving suddenly and violently, funnelled into a crack, carrying sand as an abrasive — over and over for a very long time. The smooth flowing shapes in the walls are not decorative; they are a record of how fast-moving water behaves in a confined space, cast in the rock it was cutting through.
It is also why the canyon is entered with a guide and closed when rain threatens anywhere upstream. The mechanism that made it has not stopped.
Worth knowing before you book: you do not walk in. The canyon is on Navajo land and you are driven out to it along a sandy wash in an open truck, and that ride is rough — closer to being on an ATV across open desert than to being driven anywhere. Hard bouncing over ruts and washboard, both ways, with nothing to soften it. If your back is at all unreliable, this is the part of the day that will find out. The canyon itself is the easy bit.
A river that changed its mind
A few minutes away, the Colorado swings a complete horseshoe around a standing block of rock, a thousand feet below the overlook.
Meanders like that belong to slow rivers on flat ground, wandering across a floodplain. This one is a thousand feet down in solid rock, which means the loop was there first — formed when the river ran lazily at a much higher level — and then the whole landscape rose beneath it. The river kept its shape and cut straight down, carrying an old lazy curve into the middle of hard stone.
Which is the thread running through all four stops. The canyon is water cutting down, the slot is water cutting sideways, the bend is water keeping a habit it formed somewhere else entirely, and the petrified forest is water quietly swapping a tree for a rock, one molecule at a time.
